Here is the image:
The color of the kid's skin flows well with the blue shirt he's wearing. I probably wouldn't have chosen the blue gradient background although it almost looks black. It does flow well with the image however selecting the same color for the fore and background of an image isn't the best way to bring out the main focus of an image. I noticed this ad is using multiple font types which isn't necessarily the best case for unifying the message. When looking on the kid's forearms and I see the tattoo, it obviously is supposed to reflect his toughness but on the other hand it doesn't go well with the image. The organization's logo was poorly placed in the image as well.
I think anyone reading a magazine with this ad in it would find it difficult to flip the page without reading it. I think the intense, large photo of the boy puts a fun spin on the games because ping pong is known to be a fun sport, yet the boy looks very serious and tough. “Ping Pong” is tattooed on the boy’s arms, which again gives off a tough feel to the ad. “Depending on your content, an offbeat, overly formal, or otherwise unusual typeface can be very effective at creating a certain mood” (Reynolds, 2010, p 48). The serif font, along with the small, sans serif font that says “Yeah, they’re that serious” gives the ad a playful feel because although I am sure the children are serious about the games they participate in, a game is just a game. I really like this ad and I think it is designed perfectly with the correct proportion of text and imagery!
